Red Sea

A private liveaboard, your way

The Red Sea has some of the best reefs in the world within a short run of the coast: walls of coral, clear water, and famous wrecks. Most people see it from a crowded day boat or a shared dive liveaboard. A private liveaboard gives you the same reefs with your own group, your own route and your own crew.

The fleet here ranges from motor yachts built for diving to superyachts that winter in the Red Sea between their Mediterranean seasons. Our brokers check which yachts are actually cruising here on your dates before they go on your shortlist.

How much does a Red Sea yacht charter cost?

A crewed week in the Red Sea costs from about €15,000 for a catamaran to more than €300,000 for the largest superyachts. Many Egyptian yachts sell an all-inclusive week, while others add an advance for running costs (the APA) and Egypt’s 14 percent VAT. Marine park fees are paid per guest on top.

When is the best time to charter a yacht in the Red Sea?

The Red Sea works all year:

  • Spring and autumn: warm water and settled weather, the sweet spot.
  • Winter: mild and sunny, with cooler water and the odd rough spell in the north.
  • Summer: very hot ashore, with the warmest sea.

Where can you charter a yacht in the Red Sea?

Most charters start in Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh or Port Ghalib near Marsa Alam, and each has its own international airport. Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast has also opened to a few superyachts each winter.

Red Sea charter questions

Is a Red Sea yacht charter safe?

Yes, on a well-chosen yacht. Charter yachts in Egypt sail with licensed captains and crews and carry safety and first-aid equipment for open water. Before a yacht goes on your shortlist, your broker checks its recent guest feedback and how long the crew has run it, and the captain plans each day around the weather and the north wind.

Do we have to dive?
No. Many reefs start right under the swim platform, so snorkellers see the same corals and fish as divers. Beyond the reefs there are dolphins, sandy islands, kitesurfing around El Gouna and trips into the desert and the Sinai mountains.
Is a private yacht the same as a Red Sea liveaboard?
It works the same way, only private: your group has the whole yacht, sleeps on board and moves from reef to reef, but the route, the pace and the menu are yours. Many yachts can bring a dive guide or instructor for guests who want to dive. Compare a private yacht with a shared liveaboard.
How do we get to the yacht?
Most charters start in Hurghada, El Gouna, Sharm el Sheikh or Port Ghalib near Marsa Alam. Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh and Marsa Alam all have international airports with direct flights from much of Europe, and Cairo connects to everywhere else.
Can we charter in Saudi Arabia too?
Yes. The Saudi Red Sea coast has opened up to yacht charter in recent years, and a few superyachts now spend part of the winter there. Tell us your dates and your broker will check which yachts are cruising Egypt or Saudi Arabia that season.
